Mindset engineering: how to think like a high-value professional upon arriving in Australia

This blog was written by our partner Andry Smith-Garcia (Coach & NLP Practitioner), founder of The Unleash Co. and LatiNet PRO. We want to share it because we truly believe these tools help our community grow and thrive in Australia. That’s why today we bring you this practical guide to strengthening your professional mindset when migrating.

Migrating doesn’t just change your postal address. It changes your professional identity, your brain… and the way you see yourself.

After more than 10 years helping experienced professionals—many of them engineers—position themselves in new markets, I’ve seen the same pattern repeat over and over again:

Most people don’t fail because they lack experience. They fail because they arrive with a mindset designed for another country, another culture, and another way of working.

And when that mindset isn’t updated, your real experience—the valuable one—doesn’t project. It isn’t felt. It isn’t understood.

This article is your blueprint to change that.

The real “migration shock” isn’t cultural. It’s mental.

When an experienced engineer arrives in a new country, their brain does something very predictable (and very human):

It activates Defence Mode.

This mode is linked to the amygdala and the need to survive the unknown.

What does that feel like in real life?

  • You become hyper self-critical.

  • You doubt decisions you used to make effortlessly.

  • You wait until you’re “100% ready” before applying.

  • You start thinking you need another course, another certification, another permit.

  • You obsess over your weaknesses (English, culture, local processes).

None of this means you’re not capable. It means your brain is trying to protect you.

But here’s the problem: when your brain is in defence mode, you can’t show your real value.

Literally, your executive functions—strategy, leadership, clarity, communication—drop in intensity.

And that’s where your advantage is lost.

Why do engineers experience this more intensely?

Engineers’ brains are wired differently through training.

  • Your dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is optimised for analysis, precision, and logic.

  • Your brain is trained to solve external problems, not internal ones.

  • You tend to look for “the right answer,” even in interviews.

  • You struggle to talk about achievements because you lose perspective on what you’ve accomplished.

  • Your professional identity is deeply connected to the technical, not the narrative.

This makes you brilliant at your job…but it complicates processes where you need to show who you are, not just what you know.

Two key pieces of neuroscience come into play here

1. Mirror neurons

They are responsible for a recruiter “trusting you” within seconds—often before you finish your first sentence.

If you transmit tension, doubt, or insecurity (even with 15 years of experience), their unconscious mind picks up on it immediately.

2. The Narrative Mode Network

This network translates your experience into human stories, not technical data.

Many engineers never activate it consciously.

That’s why they can explain a complex electrical system effortlessly…but break into a cold sweat when asked:“Tell me about your biggest achievement.”

The real story of an engineer who “had 12 years of experience… but whose brain was still in another country”

Let me tell you about Adrián.

Adrián was a civil engineer with 12 years of experience leading construction projects in Colombia. When he arrived in Australia, his exact words were:

“I feel like everything I did back there is worth nothing here.”

His brain interpreted the change of context as a threat.

The result?

  • He spoke very softly—not his natural volume.

  • He minimised his achievements when describing them.

  • He referred to himself as “junior” or “inexperienced.”

We did a simple but transformative reframe, and he learned something crucial:

His experience didn’t disappear on the plane. His professional identity did—and that’s what we rebuilt with specific techniques.

Three weeks later, applying neuroscience + NLP + communication strategies, Adrián stopped introducing himself as “looking for opportunities” and started speaking as what he truly was:a senior engineer with international experience, ready to contribute in a new market.

In less than two months, he secured a professional role in his field.

The conclusion I want you to remember

Your experience didn’t disappear.Your value didn’t decrease.Your career doesn’t restart from zero.

The only thing that needs resetting is your mindset.

The real victory doesn’t start when a company hires you.It starts when your brain understands that you are still the high-level professional you’ve always been—you’re just playing on a different field now.

Now, you might be thinking:“So… do I need to brainwash myself?” or “This sounds like nonsense.”

And I get it.

Engineers are often the most sceptical when it comes to tools that seem this simple.

After all, you’ve spent years training the part of your brain that demands data, logic, and precision—and this sounds almost too easy to be real, right?

That’s exactly why I’m not asking you to believe me.

My job isn’t to convince you with words, but to invite you to test it yourself.

Try one tool.Just one.And observe what happens.

Don’t judge the process—judge the results.

If it worked for hundreds of engineers in your exact situation, there’s a good chance it could work for you too. Or maybe it won’t.

But one thing is certain—and science backs this up:neuroscience works when applied correctly.
